1957 Topps #94 Bobby Del Greco

About Bobby Del Greco
A Pittsburgh Hill District native nicknamed "The Greek" — from the Italian meaning of his surname — Bobby Del Greco was signed by Hall of Famer Pie Traynor for $500 in 1950 and debuted in center field for his hometown Pirates at 19 in 1952, going 3-for-4; Branch Rickey called him one of the finest instinctive outfielders he had seen since Terry Moore. On May 17, 1956, Pittsburgh sent him and Dick Littlefield to St. Louis for Bill Virdon — a swap Cardinals GM Frank Lane later called the worst deal he ever made. That September his two circus catches against Milwaukee in a 2-1, twelve-inning Cardinals win helped knock the Braves out of first in the season's final days. Traded to the Cubs on April 20, 1957, soon after this Cardinals card appeared, he later played for the Yankees, Phillies, and Athletics, batting .229 with 42 home runs in 731 games across nine seasons, then drove a Pittsburgh Post-Gazette delivery truck until 1993. He died in 2019 at 86.
