About Don Blasingame
Signed by St. Louis in 1953 after Army service during the Korean War, Don Blasingame replaced Red Schoendienst as the Cardinals' regular second baseman in 1956 — teammates called the speedster "Blazing-game" for his baserunning, soon shortened to "The Blazer." This card caught him at his peak: in 1957 he hit .271 with 176 hits, 101 runs, and 21 steals while leading NL second basemen in assists, double plays, and total chances per game. A 1958 All-Star, he was dealt to San Francisco in December 1959, then helped Cincinnati win its first pennant in 21 years in 1961, appearing in the World Series loss to the Yankees. Notoriously tough to double up, he retired after 12 seasons with 1,366 hits and fewer double plays grounded into per at-bat than anyone in history to that point. He later played for Japan's Nankai Hawks as "Don Blazer," coached and managed there for over a decade, and married 1957 Miss Missouri Sara Cooper, daughter of Walker Cooper. He died in 2005.
