About the 1957 St. Louis Cardinals
The 1957 St. Louis Cardinals were the National League's runners-up, going 87–67 under manager Fred Hutchinson and finishing second, eight games behind the Milwaukee Braves, who went on to beat the Yankees in a seven-game World Series. Playing at Busch Stadium — the former Sportsman's Park — St. Louis was carried by Stan Musial, who hit .351 with 29 home runs and 102 RBIs to win the National League batting title. Del Ennis drove in 105 runs with 24 homers, Wally Moon hit .295 with 24 home runs, and Lindy McDaniel led the staff with 15 wins and a 3.49 ERA. Hutchinson's strong second-place showing earned him The Sporting News Manager of the Year Award — and a nickname, "The Big Bear," from broadcaster Joe Garagiola.
