About Hobie Landrith
Hobert Neal "Hobie" Landrith (1930-2023) was a left-handed-hitting catcher who signed with the Cincinnati Reds before the 1949 season, reportedly for a $16,000 bonus, choosing Cincinnati over Detroit. One of nine children from a family that produced seven catching brothers, he debuted with the Reds on July 30, 1950. Within weeks his loud on-field chatter earned him national notice and the nickname "the holler guy," a communicative style modeled on Birdie Tebbetts. Over 14 seasons (1950-1963) Landrith caught for the Reds, Cubs, Cardinals, Giants, Mets, Orioles, and Senators, mostly as a reliable backup. His 1957 Topps card shows him with St. Louis, where he backed up Hal Smith in 1957-1958. His best year came with the 1959 Giants, hitting .251 while guiding Sam Jones's 21-win season. In October 1961 he became the New York Mets' first-ever expansion draft pick, prompting Casey Stengel's remark that a team needs a catcher "or you're going to have a lot of passed balls." He retired with 772 games, a .233 average, 34 home runs, and 203 RBIs.
