Uncorrected error: Vinegar mispelled "Vinigar" It was never corrected, so there is only one version of the card.
The #176 "Bakep" error: the back header reads "EUGENF W. BAKEP," the whole name garbled on the printing plate. It is the ONLY error Topps corrected in 1957, which is why the error back carries the premium — a PSA population near 215, topping out at PSA 8.
About Wilmer Mizell
Wilmer “Vinegar Bend” Mizell took his nickname from the tiny Alabama hamlet where he learned to pitch — a whistle-stop supposedly named for a derailed train that spilled its load of vinegar — and Topps compounded the fun by misspelling it “Vinigar” on the back of this card. Signed by the Cardinals for $500 in 1949 after pitching barefoot at a tryout, the hard-throwing lefty debuted in 1952, lost 1954-55 to Army service (going 36-2 in service ball), and earned his lone All-Star selection in 1959. Traded to Pittsburgh in May 1960 in the deal that sent Julian Javier to St. Louis, he went 13-5 with a 3.12 ERA to help the Pirates to the pennant and their Mazeroski-capped World Series upset of the Yankees. He finished 90-88 with 918 strikeouts across nine seasons (1952-62), then won three terms in Congress as a North Carolina Republican (1969-75). He died in 1999.
