Uncorrected error: Hit .323 in '51, not '53 It was never corrected, so there is only one version of the card.
The #176 "Bakep" error: the back header reads "EUGENF W. BAKEP," the whole name garbled on the printing plate. It is the ONLY error Topps corrected in 1957, which is why the error back carries the premium — a PSA population near 215, topping out at PSA 8.
About Charlie Neal
Charlie Neal signed with Brooklyn in 1950 for little more than a train ticket to spring training, then broke out by hitting .323 with 24 triples at Class-B Lancaster in 1951 — the very season this 1957 Topps card misdates, crediting the .323 average to 1953. Pictured as Brooklyn's young shortstop, he moved to second base when the Dodgers reached Los Angeles in 1958, hit a career-high 22 home runs, and peaked in 1959 with 19 homers, 83 RBIs, a Gold Glove, and the first of two All-Star seasons (1959–60). That October he was the World Series' hitting star, batting .370 against the White Sox with two Game 2 homers off Bob Shaw — the first landing in Comiskey's bleachers as a fan's beer famously showered left fielder Al Smith. Neal also stroked the Los Angeles Dodgers' first-ever hit and drove in the first run in Mets history in 1962, finishing in 1963 with 87 home runs and a .259 average. He died in Dallas in 1996 at 65.
