1957 Topps #5 Sal Maglie

About Sal Maglie
Salvatore Anthony Maglie (1917–1992) took the long road to stardom. He debuted with the New York Giants in August 1945 at age 28, then jumped to the Mexican League in 1946 and was banned by Commissioner Happy Chandler. Schooled there by Dolf Luque, he returned in 1950 a finished ace, going 18-4 with a league-best 2.71 ERA, then pacing the NL with 23 wins for the 1951 pennant winners — he started the playoff finale decided by Bobby Thomson's homer. An All-Star in 1951 and 1952, "Sal the Barber" earned his nickname with high, tight fastballs that seemed to shave batters' chins. Purchased by Brooklyn in 1956, he went 13-5, no-hit the Phillies on September 25, beat Whitey Ford in Game 1 of the World Series, and was the hard-luck loser of Don Larsen's Game 5 perfect game. This first-series card shows him in Brooklyn's final season; in 1957 he became the last man to wear all three New York teams' uniforms, retiring 119-62 with a 3.15 ERA.
