About Roy Campanella

Roy Campanella (1921–1993) turned pro at 15, catching for the Negro National League's Washington/Baltimore Elite Giants beginning in 1937 before Branch Rickey signed him for Brooklyn. From his debut on April 20, 1948, through 1957 he was the Dodgers' catcher, earning eight straight All-Star selections (1949–56) and three NL MVP awards (1951, 1953, 1955) — the first Black player to win multiple MVPs. His 1953 season (41 home runs, 142 RBI) set catcher records that stood until 1970, and in 1955 he homered in Game 3 as Brooklyn won its first World Series. Known to everyone as "Campy," he hit 242 home runs across ten Brooklyn seasons. Card #210 in the 1957 Topps set is his final regular-issue card as an active player: on January 28, 1958, his car skidded on ice into a telephone pole, breaking his neck and leaving him paralyzed. A 1959 tribute exhibition drew 93,103 fans, then baseball's largest crowd, and Cooperstown inducted him in 1969, the second Black player enshrined after Jackie Robinson.
