About Roger Craig
Roger Lee Craig (1930-2023) was a right-handed pitcher signed by the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1950. Called up mid-1955 after a 10-2 start at Triple-A Montreal, he beat the Reds on a three-hitter in his debut, then won Game 5 of the 1955 World Series against the Yankees, helping Brooklyn to its only title; he was also part of the 1959 champion Los Angeles Dodgers, tying for the NL lead with four shutouts. The expansion New York Mets drafted him in 1962, and he became the face of their futility, going 10-24 and 5-22 while enduring an 18-game losing streak he tried to snap by switching his uniform number from 38 to 13. Traded to St. Louis, he won Game 4 in relief for the 1964 champion Cardinals, his fourth ring. Craig finished 74-98 with a 3.83 ERA, then earned lasting fame as the split-finger fastball guru and as manager of the 1989 NL-pennant-winning Giants.
