About Carl Furillo
Carl Furillo signed into pro ball with Reading in 1940, and Brooklyn was so impressed it purchased the entire minor-league franchise to get him. After three years of Pacific combat duty in World War II that earned him a Purple Heart, he patrolled right field for the Dodgers from 1946 to 1960, mastering the tricky wall at Ebbets Field. His famed arm — he once threw out Pittsburgh pitcher Mel Queen at first base on an apparent single — made him "The Reading Rifle," while teammates called him "Skoonj" after scungilli, his favorite Italian dish. A two-time All-Star (1952–53), Furillo won the 1953 NL batting title at .344 despite fracturing his hand in a September brawl with Leo Durocher, and retired at .299 with 1,910 hits and 192 home runs. He played in seven World Series, homering in his first at-bat of the 1955 Series as Brooklyn finally beat the Yankees, and won again in 1959 — card #45 catches him in the heart of those pennant years.
