About Al Walker
Albert Bluford "Rube" Walker (1926-1992) was a catcher for the 1957 Brooklyn Dodgers. A Lenoir, North Carolina native, he earned the nickname "Rube" as a boy serving as batboy for the local Class-D club, idolizing team star Rube Robinson. Signed by the Cubs organization out of high school in 1944, he tore up the minors, leading the Three-I League with a .354 average in 1946, and debuted with Chicago in 1948. Traded to Brooklyn in 1951, he spent seven seasons as the reliable backup to Hall of Famer Roy Campanella. When Campanella was hurt, Walker caught the deciding 1951 pennant playoff game and was behind the plate for Bobby Thomson's "Shot Heard 'Round the World." He earned a World Series ring with the 1955 champion Dodgers, batting .227 over 11 seasons. Walker's greatest fame came later as a coach: he ran the pitching staff of the 1969 "Miracle" Mets and is widely credited with popularizing the five-man rotation.
