About Don Mueller
Donald Frederick Mueller (April 14, 1927 - December 28, 2011) was a right fielder whose steady contact hitting made him a New York Giants mainstay. Son of former Pirates outfielder Walter Mueller, he was signed by Giants scout Gordon Maguire in 1944 and debuted in 1948. Nicknamed "Mandrake the Magician" for his knack of stroking the ball through holes in the defense, Mueller struck out only 146 times in his career and made the National League All-Star team in 1954 and 1955. His 1954 season was his finest: he led the NL with 212 hits, batted .342, and hit .389 (7-for-18) as the Giants swept Cleveland in the World Series. In the 1951 pennant playoff he singled to help set up the "Shot Heard 'Round the World," but tore ankle tendons sliding into third and missed Bobby Thomson's famous homer. He retired in 1959 with a .296 average. This card captures Mueller near the end of his Giants tenure, before his 1958 trade to the Chicago White Sox.
