About Steve Ridzik
Steve Ridzik signed with the Philadelphia Phillies in 1945 at just 16, after scout Fred Mathews persuaded his mother — on the condition he finish high school first. The right-hander debuted as a September call-up with the pennant-winning 1950 Whiz Kids, then pitched eleven big-league seasons for the Phillies (1950-55, 1966), Cincinnati (1955), New York Giants (1956-57), Cleveland (1958), and Washington (1963-65), finishing 39-38 with a 3.79 ERA. Philadelphia writers nicknamed him "Thomas Edison" because he was always experimenting with pitches. Drafted off Seattle for $15,000, he went 6-2 for the Giants in 1956; this card pictures him during the franchise's farewell 1957 season in New York before the move to San Francisco. On Steve Ridzik Day at Yankee Stadium in May 1964 — his 20th year in organized ball — friends from his native Yonkers gave him a Chevrolet and golf clubs. He later co-founded the Major League Baseball Players Alumni Association with Chuck Hinton.
