1957 Topps #124 Dave Philley

About Dave Philley
A rugged switch-hitting outfielder from Paris, Texas — he learned to bat right-handed after breaking his left arm falling from a tree at age eight — Dave Philley signed with the White Sox in 1940, debuted in September 1941, then served four years in the Army during World War II. Chicago's regular center fielder from 1947, he led American League outfielders in assists three times, hit .303 for the 1953 Athletics, and started two games of the 1954 World Series for Cleveland's pennant winners. A May 1956 six-player trade brought him back to the White Sox — the brief second stint this card captures before he moved on to Detroit during 1957. Philley then became baseball's premier pinch hitter: eight straight pinch hits to close 1958 with the Phillies and a ninth to open 1959, still a major-league record, plus an American League-record 24 pinch hits in 1961 at age 41. He retired in 1962 with 1,700 hits and a .270 average, returning to his 557-acre cattle ranch.
