About Ron Northey
Ron Northey reached pro ball through a Connie Mack–arranged athletic scholarship at Duke, entering the Athletics' farm system in 1939 before his contract was sold to the Phillies. A right fielder with a fire-hydrant build — sportswriters dubbed him "Round Ron" — and an exceptionally strong throwing arm, he debuted in Philadelphia in 1942 and peaked in 1944 with 35 doubles, 22 home runs, and 104 RBI before Army service claimed his 1945 season. Over 12 seasons with the Phillies, Cardinals, Reds, Cubs, and White Sox he hit .276 with 108 homers, but his legacy is the pinch role: the first big-leaguer with three career pinch-hit grand slams (1947, 1948, 1950), he batted .385 with 15 pinch hits for the 1956 White Sox. This card captures his final season, 1957, split between Chicago and Philadelphia. He later coached on Danny Murtaugh's Pirates staff; son Scott also reached the majors.
