About Larry Doby
Eleven weeks after Jackie Robinson's debut, Lawrence Eugene Doby broke the American League's color barrier on July 5, 1947, jumping straight from the Negro leagues' Newark Eagles — where he had won the 1946 Negro League World Series — to the Cleveland Indians. The center fielder made seven consecutive All-Star teams (1949-55), and his Game 4 homer off Johnny Sain in the 1948 World Series, the first by a Black player in Series history, helped Cleveland win the title; the photo of Doby embracing pitcher Steve Gromek became an enduring image of integration. He led the AL in home runs in 1952 and 1954, adding a league-best 126 RBIs in 1954 while finishing second in MVP voting. Traded to Chicago in October 1955, he drove in 102 runs in 1956; this card pictures him in his second White Sox season. In 1978 he became the majors' second Black manager, again with Chicago. The Veterans Committee elected him to the Hall of Fame in 1998.
