1957 Topps #99 Bob Keegan

About Bob Keegan
Bob Keegan traveled one of baseball's longest roads to the big leagues. Signed into the Yankees system out of Bucknell, he spent World War II as a B-24 navigator in New Guinea and didn't start his pro career until 1946, at age 25. After a 20-11 season for Syracuse, the White Sox purchased his contract, and the right-hander finally debuted in 1953 at 32, where teammates dubbed him 'Smiley' because he always looked like he was smiling, even when he wasn't. He went 16-9 with a 3.09 ERA in 1954 and made the All-Star team, then delivered his masterpiece the same season this card hit shelves: an August 20, 1957 no-hitter against Washington at Comiskey Park at age 37, on an estimated 85 pitches. Keegan finished 40-36 over six White Sox seasons, then won 18 games for his hometown Rochester Red Wings in 1959.
