1957 Topps #213 Les Moss

About Les Moss
Signed by St. Louis Browns scout Jack Fournier as a 16-year-old in October 1941 and touted in the sports pages as "the greatest find in professional baseball," John Lester Moss caught 13 major-league seasons (1946-1958) for the Browns, Red Sox, Orioles, and White Sox, batting .247 with 63 home runs in 824 games. His best year came in 1949 (.291, with a .399 on-base mark), and on July 11, 1948, after Browns coach Fred Hofmann dreamed Moss would beat Bob Feller with a single, he beat Feller with a home run instead. This card pictures the dependable veteran backup Chicago acquired in June 1955. Moss later managed the White Sox for 36 games in 1968 while Al López recovered from surgery, and he started 27-26 as Detroit's manager in 1979 before being abruptly fired that June so the Tigers could hire Sparky Anderson. He spent the 1980s as Houston's pitching coach and died in 2012 at age 87.
