Uncorrected error: Had 21 SB in '56, not 20 It was never corrected, so there is only one version of the card.
The #176 "Bakep" error: the back header reads "EUGENF W. BAKEP," the whole name garbled on the printing plate. It is the ONLY error Topps corrected in 1957, which is why the error back carries the premium — a PSA population near 215, topping out at PSA 8.
About Luis Aparicio
Luis Ernesto Aparicio Montiel entered pro ball in storybook fashion: at Gavilanes' home opener in Maracaibo on November 18, 1953, his father, Venezuelan shortstop legend Luis Aparicio Ortega, led off, then handed his son the bat and the position. Signed by the White Sox for $10,000 in 1954, he replaced Chico Carrasquel at shortstop in 1956 and became the first Latin American Rookie of the Year, leading the AL with 21 steals — one more than the back of this card credits him, a well-known uncorrected error. "Little Louie" (5-foot-9, 160 pounds) won nine straight AL stolen-base crowns (1956–64) and nine Gold Gloves while playing for Chicago (1956–62, 1968–70), Baltimore (1963–67), and Boston (1971–73), appearing in 13 All-Star Games. He sparked the 1959 "Go-Go" Sox pennant with 56 steals, finishing MVP runner-up to Nellie Fox, and won his only ring in the Orioles' 1966 sweep of the Dodgers. With 2,677 hits, 506 steals, and a then-record 2,583 games at shortstop, he became Venezuela's first Hall of Famer in 1984.
