1957 Topps #38 Nellie Fox

About Nellie Fox
Jacob Nelson "Nellie" Fox signed with Connie Mack's Philadelphia Athletics at 16 in 1944 after his mother wrote Mack asking for a tryout. Traded to the Chicago White Sox for Joe Tipton after 1949, the 5-foot-9 second baseman — dubbed "Little Nel" for his modest frame — anchored Chicago's infield for 14 seasons, wielding a thick-handled "bottle bat" with a wad of chewing tobacco in his cheek. This card lands on a peak year: in 1957 Fox led the American League in hits, batted .317, and won the first Gold Glove ever awarded to a second baseman. A 15-time All-Star who once played 798 straight games at second, he struck out just 216 times in his career and retired with 2,663 hits and a .288 average. In 1959 he won AL MVP as Chicago claimed its first pennant in 40 years, hitting .375 in a World Series loss to the Dodgers. He died of cancer in 1975; the Veterans Committee elected him to the Hall of Fame in 1997.
