About Gerry Staley
Gerald Lee Staley (1920–2008), a sinkerballing right-hander from Brush Prairie, Washington, broke in with Boise of the Pioneer League in 1941, served in the Army Medical Corps in the South Pacific during World War II, and reached the Cardinals in 1947. He won 19, 17, and 18 games for St. Louis from 1951–53, making the All-Star team in 1952 and 1953. After stops in Cincinnati and New York, he landed with the White Sox in 1956, where manager Al Lopez converted him to relief work in 1957 — this card catches him at that career-saving pivot — and his 2.43 ERA from 1957–60 led all American League relievers. On September 22, 1959, with the bases loaded and one out in the ninth at Cleveland, his first-pitch sinker to Vic Power became a Luis Aparicio double play that clinched Chicago's first pennant in 40 years. An All-Star again in 1960, he finished 134-111 with 61 saves, then spent 17 years running Clark County's parks.
