1957 Topps #160 Billy Pierce

About Billy Pierce
Walter William "Billy" Pierce (1927-2015) was a left-handed pitcher whose slight build belied a 1945-1964 major-league career. His hometown Detroit Tigers signed him in the mid-1940s, and he debuted at 18, but he blossomed only after a 1948 trade to the Chicago White Sox, where he anchored the rotation for thirteen seasons. A seven-time All-Star, Pierce led the American League in ERA (1.97 in 1955), wins (1957), strikeouts (1953), and complete games three straight years. On June 27, 1958, he retired 26 straight Senators before Ed Fitz Gerald's pinch double broke up his perfect game with two outs in the ninth. Traded to San Francisco, he starred in the 1962 pennant race and beat the Yankees with a three-hitter in Game 6 of the World Series. Nicknamed "Mr. Zero" as a Detroit schoolboy for his shutouts, he finished 211-169 with a 3.27 ERA. The White Sox retired his number 19 in 1987.
