1957 Topps #221 Dixie Howell

About Dixie Howell
Millard 'Dixie' Howell picked up his nickname pitching for Logan, West Virginia, where, he told The Sporting News, Black fans would holler 'come on Dixie' whenever he came to bat. Signed into Cleveland's system as an outfielder in 1937 and converted to pitching at 17, Howell spent nearly two decades in the minors, interrupted by World War II: he volunteered for the Army, was captured crossing Belgium's Meuse River in September 1944, and survived months in the Stalag VII-A prison camp before liberation in 1945. After cameos with Cleveland (1940) and Cincinnati (1949), the right-hander finally stuck with the White Sox in June 1955 at age 35, going 8-3 with a 2.93 ERA and nine saves — 'the salvation of our bullpen,' manager Marty Marion said. A rare slugging reliever, he homered twice on Father's Day 1957 at Comiskey Park, the very season of this card. Howell finished 19-15 with 19 saves and a 3.78 ERA before dying of a heart attack at spring training in March 1960.
