1957 Topps #222 Alex Grammas

Cincinnati Redlegs · National League · Series 3 (#177-264) · 3rd base
ErrorUER

Uncorrected error: Born in '26, not '27 It was never corrected, so there is only one version of the card.

The #176 "Bakep" error: the back header reads "EUGENF W. BAKEP," the whole name garbled on the printing plate. It is the ONLY error Topps corrected in 1957, which is why the error back carries the premium — a PSA population near 215, topping out at PSA 8.

About Alex Grammas

A Birmingham, Alabama native and the son of a Greek immigrant, Alex Grammas served in World War II, starred at Mississippi State, and signed with the White Sox in 1949. The slick-fielding infielder debuted with the St. Louis Cardinals in 1954 and led National League shortstops in fielding average in 1955. Traded to Cincinnati in May 1956, he backed up around the Redlegs infield — third base on this card — and hit .303 in 1957, second on the club only to Frank Robinson. Across ten seasons with the Cardinals, Redlegs, and Cubs he batted .247 in 913 games. Grammas earned wider fame as Sparky Anderson's trusted third-base coach, winning World Series rings with the 1975 Big Red Machine and 1984 Tigers, and as Milwaukee's manager in 1976-77 he became the first Greek-American to skipper a big-league club for a full season. The card carries a noted error, listing his birth year as 1927 rather than 1926. He died in 2019 at age 93.
