About Frank House
Henry Franklin "Pig" House — the nickname stuck from infancy, when family said he was "big as a house" and he twisted "big" into "pig" — signed out of Hueytown (Alabama) High School with Detroit in 1948 for one of the era's biggest bonuses: $75,000 and two automobiles. Debuting on July 21, 1950, at age 20, the catcher was known for a fast release, a strong arm, smart game-calling, and blocking the plate. Over ten seasons with the Tigers (1950-51, 1954-57, 1961), Kansas City Athletics (1958-59), and Cincinnati Reds (1960), he hit .248 with 47 home runs and 235 RBI in 653 games, peaking in 1955 at .259 with 15 homers and 53 RBI. This card marks the final season of his first Tigers run — on November 20, 1957, Detroit sent him to Kansas City in a thirteen-player blockbuster. Back home, House served in the Alabama Legislature, spearheaded the 1967 creation of the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame, chaired its first board, and was inducted himself in 1975.
