About Harvey Kuenn
An All-American shortstop at the University of Wisconsin, Harvey Kuenn signed with Detroit for a $55,000 bonus in June 1952 and was the 1953 AL Rookie of the Year, taking 23 of 24 votes while leading the league in hits. He topped the AL in hits four times (1953, 1954, 1956, 1959) and made the All-Star team every year from 1953 through 1960 — this card catches the Tigers' shortstop in mid-prime, fresh off his third hit crown. After winning the 1959 batting title at .353, Kuenn was traded to Cleveland for Rocky Colavito two days before Opening Day 1960, the only time a reigning batting champion was swapped for a reigning home run champion. He later struck out to end Sandy Koufax's 1965 perfect game, finished with 2,092 hits and a .303 average, and managed Milwaukee's slugging 1982 "Harvey's Wallbangers" from a 23-24 start to the AL pennant, falling in Game 7 of the World Series.
