About Bob Wilson

Though his 1957 Topps card reads "Bob Wilson," Detroit's catcher was universally known as Red Wilson, nicknamed for his bright mop of auburn hair. A two-sport star at the University of Wisconsin, he won Big Ten football MVP honors as a senior end and hit .426 for the Badger nine before signing with the Chicago White Sox in 1950. Chicago dealt him to Detroit for veteran catcher Matt Batts in May 1954, and he spent seven seasons with the Tigers before finishing with Cleveland in 1960. His finest year was 1958: a .299 average, a team-leading 10 stolen bases without once being caught, and the July 20 no-hitter he caught for Jim Bunning against the Red Sox at Fenway Park. In 602 big-league games he batted .258 with 24 home runs. Wilson later became a bank president in Madison and was inducted into the Wisconsin Athletic Hall of Fame.
