About Bill Tuttle
Bill Tuttle signed with Detroit out of Bradley University and, after a brief 1952 trial, took over as the Tigers' center fielder in 1954 alongside 19-year-old Al Kaline — manager Fred Hutchinson dubbed the young pair "the jackrabbits." A superb defender who led American League outfielders in putouts in 1955 and 1960 and in assists in 1959 and 1960, Tuttle enjoyed his best year in 1955, playing all 154 games with 102 runs, 14 homers, and 78 RBI. This card captures his final Detroit season: in November 1957 he went to Kansas City in a 13-player trade, later finishing with Minnesota (1961-63) and career marks of a .259 average, 1,105 hits, and 67 home runs across 11 seasons. Introduced to chewing tobacco by teammate Harvey Kuenn in 1955, Tuttle was diagnosed with oral cancer in 1993 and spent his final years touring clubhouses with Joe Garagiola's National Spit Tobacco Education Program, warning players against the habit. He died in 1998; Oral Health America's Bill Tuttle Award honors his advocacy.
