About Al Aber

Albert Julius Aber was a left-handed pitcher born July 31, 1927, in Cleveland, Ohio. A graduate of West Technical High School, he signed with his hometown Cleveland Indians in 1946 at age 19 and reached the majors on September 15, 1950, when he won his debut with a complete game. His career was interrupted by military service during the Korean War in 1951 and 1952. Aber pitched for the Indians (1950, 1953), Detroit Tigers (1953-1957), and Kansas City Athletics (1957). His best season came in 1955 with Detroit, when he appeared in 39 games and went 6-3 with a 3.38 ERA. Over 168 big-league games he compiled a 24-25 record, a 4.18 ERA, and 169 strikeouts. After baseball he worked as a sales representative, and he died May 20, 1993, in Garfield Heights, Ohio. This 1957 Topps card captures Aber near the end of his major-league run.
