About Bob Kennedy
Robert Daniel Kennedy was born August 18, 1920, in Chicago, where he was working as a popcorn vendor at Comiskey Park when the hometown White Sox signed the 16-year-old third baseman in 1937. He debuted in 1939, and in 1940 became the first teenager to play 150 games in a big-league season. A Marine pilot and flight instructor, Kennedy lost 1943-1945 to World War II and 1952 after being recalled for the Korean War. Traded to Cleveland in 1948, he won a World Series that fall with the Indians, singling in a run in Game Two. He later belted the first grand slam at Baltimore's Memorial Stadium (July 30, 1954). Over 16 seasons with the White Sox, Indians, Orioles, Tigers, and Dodgers he hit .254 with 63 home runs and 514 RBIs, then managed the Cubs and Athletics and ran front offices into the 1990s. His son Terry became a four-time All-Star catcher.
