About Billy Hoeft
Billy Hoeft was a schoolboy legend in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, running off 34 straight wins for his high school and American Legion teams, and in a 1950 perfect game against Hartford he struck out all 27 batters he faced. Signed by Tigers scout George Moriarty that year, the 6-foot-3 left-hander debuted with Detroit in 1952 at age 19, and in 1953 fired an immaculate inning — nine pitches, three strikeouts — against the White Sox, the majors' first since 1928. He broke out in 1955, going 16-7 with a 2.99 ERA, a major-league-best seven shutouts, and an All-Star selection, then won 20 games in 1956. This card catches him at that peak: in 1957 he slid to 9-11 despite a 3.48 ERA, once going all 15 innings in a 4-3 loss at Yankee Stadium, and hit all three of his career home runs that season, two in one game. Traded away in 1959, he pitched for five more clubs through 1966, finishing 97-101 with 1,140 strikeouts.
