About Dick Williams
Richard Hirschfeld Williams signed with Brooklyn out of high school in 1947 for a $1,200 bonus, but a separated shoulder from a diving-catch attempt in 1952 wrecked his throwing arm and turned a prospect into a six-position utilityman — and, ultimately, a thinker. Claimed off waivers by Baltimore in mid-1956, he became a Paul Richards favorite: the Orioles skipper acquired him four separate times and often batted him leadoff. This card catches that first Orioles stint, just before a 1957 move to Cleveland. Williams hit .260 with 70 home runs across 13 seasons, then earned immortality in the dugout — driving Boston's 1967 "Impossible Dream" pennant after the Red Sox had finished ninth, winning back-to-back World Series with Oakland in 1972 and 1973, and steering San Diego to the 1984 pennant, making him just the second manager to win pennants with three different franchises. He went 1,571-1,451 over 21 seasons and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2008.
