1957 Topps #230 George Kell

About George Kell
George Kell signed into pro ball in 1940 after the Swifton, Arkansas, postmaster recommended him to a Brooklyn farm club, then led all of professional baseball with a .396 average for Lancaster in 1943 to earn a September call-up with Connie Mack's Philadelphia Athletics. A May 1946 trade to Detroit for Barney McCosky launched him as the American League's premier third baseman: ten All-Star selections and a .306 career average with 2,054 hits over 15 seasons for the A's, Tigers, Red Sox, White Sox, and Orioles. On the 1949 season's final day he went 2-for-3 to edge Ted Williams for the batting title, .3429 to .3427, denying Williams a third Triple Crown. This card captures Kell's farewell 1957 season in Baltimore — an All-Star even then — before 37 years as a Tigers broadcaster. The Veterans Committee called him to Cooperstown in 1983.
