About George Susce

The son of longtime big-league catcher and coach George Susce — and known around ballparks as "Junior" — George Daniel Susce grew up less than a mile from Pittsburgh's Forbes Field and signed with the Red Sox in January 1950, taking a smaller bonus than Cleveland offered. After Army service from 1952 to 1954, the right-hander broke in with Boston in 1955, going 9-7 with a 3.06 ERA and firing a one-hit shutout against Kansas City in July — with his father, then an Athletics coach, watching him pitch in the majors for the first time. This card caught Susce at his peak: used mainly in relief in 1957, he opened 6-0 with a 3.14 ERA before tiring late. Waived to Detroit in May 1958, he finished 22-17 with 177 strikeouts over five seasons (1955-59) and died in 2010.
