About Ike Delock
Born Ivan Martin Delock in Highland Park, Michigan, on November 11, 1929, the right-hander learned to pitch while serving in the Marine Corps from 1946 to 1948, and Red Sox scout Maurice DeLoof signed him in 1948 without ever having seen him play. Debuting with Boston on April 17, 1952, Delock earned his first win a week later by striking out Mickey Mantle with the bases loaded. Splitting his career between the bullpen and rotation, he led the American League with 11 relief wins in 1956 and took home the Boston writers' Unsung Hero award — this card catches him fresh off that breakout year, and he went 9-8, mostly in relief, in 1957. His best stretch came in 1958, when he reeled off 13 consecutive victories en route to 14 wins. Delock finished 84-75 with a 4.03 ERA and 672 strikeouts, all but one month of it with Boston before a brief 1963 stint in Baltimore. He died in 2022 at age 92.
