About Billy Martin
Born Alfred Manuel Pesano Jr. in Berkeley, California, in 1928 — "Billy" grew out of the Italian endearments his grandmother cooed over him — Martin entered pro ball in 1946 with Idaho Falls, starred for Casey Stengel's Oakland Oaks, and debuted with Stengel's Yankees in 1950. The scrappy second baseman, dubbed "Billy the Kid" by the press, was New York's October catalyst: his lunging catch of Jackie Robinson's bases-loaded popup saved Game 7 of the 1952 World Series, and in 1953 he hit .500 with a record-tying 12 hits and 23 total bases — breaking Babe Ruth's mark — to earn Series MVP honors. A 1956 All-Star with four rings, he batted .333 across five World Series. This card captures his final Yankee season: the May 1957 Copacabana nightclub brawl precipitated his June 15 trade to Kansas City. Martin later managed five clubs, won the 1977 World Series as Yankees skipper, and saw his No. 1 retired in 1986; he died in a Christmas Day 1989 crash.
