Uncorrected error: Played for Athletics in '54 It was never corrected, so there is only one version of the card.
The #176 "Bakep" error: the back header reads "EUGENF W. BAKEP," the whole name garbled on the printing plate. It is the ONLY error Topps corrected in 1957, which is why the error back carries the premium — a PSA population near 215, topping out at PSA 8.
About Art Ditmar
Arthur John Ditmar was a right-handed pitcher who signed with the Philadelphia Athletics in 1947 out of high school and reached the majors on April 19, 1954, debuting in relief for the Athletics (confirming this card's note that he played for the club in '54). He moved with the franchise to Kansas City through 1956, then was traded to the New York Yankees, for whom he pitched from 1957 to 1961. Ditmar shone in the 1957 World Series against Milwaukee, throwing four scoreless innings, and won a championship ring with the 1958 Yankees. His finest year came in 1960 (15-9, 3.06 ERA), but Casey Stengel's choice to start him in Games 1 and 5 of that World Series backfired badly, as he was knocked out early in both losses to Pittsburgh. He finished 72-77 with a 3.98 ERA over nine seasons. Later, a 1980s Budweiser commercial mistakenly named Ditmar as the pitcher who yielded Bill Mazeroski's Series-winning home run; he sued Anheuser-Busch, though the case was dismissed. Ditmar died in 2021 at age 92.
