Yogi Berra - 1957 Topps #2
1957 Topps #2 Yogi Berra
Yogi Berra's base card; he also appears with Mantle on the #407 'Yankees' Power Hitters' combo, one of Topps' first multi-player cards.

About Yogi Berra
Lawrence Peter Berra grew up on The Hill in St. Louis, turned down the hometown Cardinals and Browns before signing with the Yankees for the $500 bonus he demanded, and served as a Navy machine gunner off the Normandy coast on D-Day before his 1946 debut. Boyhood friends had dubbed him "Yogi" for his resemblance to the cross-legged Hindu yogi in a movie they'd watched. From 1946 to 1963 he anchored the Yankees behind the plate, earning 18 All-Star selections, three AL MVP awards (1951, 1954, 1955), and a record ten World Series rings as a player — including catching Don Larsen's perfect game in Game 5 of the 1956 Series, months before this card reached packs. He retired with 358 home runs and a .285 average, managed both the 1964 Yankees and 1973 Mets to pennants, and entered Cooperstown in 1972. Here he holds down card #2; he also joins Mickey Mantle on #407, "Yankees' Power Hitters," one of Topps' first multi-player cards.
