Don Larsen - 1957 Topps #175
1957 Topps #175 Don Larsen

About Don Larsen
Don Larsen (1929-2020) was a right-handed pitcher signed out of a San Diego American Legion team by St. Louis Browns scout Art Schwartz in 1947 for an $850 bonus. After several minor-league seasons he reached the majors with the Browns/Orioles in 1953, then joined the New York Yankees for 1955-1959 as part of a 17-player trade. On October 8, 1956, in Game 5 of the World Series against the Brooklyn Dodgers, Larsen retired all 27 batters on 97 pitches for the only perfect game in World Series history, striking out Dale Mitchell looking for the final out. He was named World Series MVP and won the Babe Ruth Award. Teammates nicknamed him 'Gooney Bird' for his protruding ears, pear-shaped body, and long, dangling arms. Larsen pitched 14 seasons for seven clubs, finishing 81-91 with a 3.78 ERA, and won two World Series titles (1956, 1958). This is his 1957 Topps Yankees card, issued the year after his perfect game.
