About Tommy Carroll
Thomas Edward Carroll (1936-2021), a shortstop and third baseman from Queens, New York, signed with the Yankees as a "bonus baby" on January 26, 1955, and reached the majors that May 7 while still a University of Notre Dame student. Roster rules kept the raw teenager glued to the bench, so New York used him mostly as a pinch runner. In the 1955 World Series against Brooklyn he appeared in two games running the bases but never batted, making him the youngest Yankee, and second-youngest player, ever to appear in a World Series. He was also with the 1956 champions but did not play in that Series. Carroll hit .300 in just 30 major-league at-bats across parts of three seasons, closing out with the 1959 Kansas City Athletics after an April trade. He later graduated magna cum laude from Notre Dame and spent roughly 26 years as a CIA operations officer. This 1957 Topps card captures him near the end of his brief Yankees run.
