About the 1957 New York Yankees

The 1957 New York Yankees won the American League pennant — the franchise's 23rd — going 98–56 under manager Casey Stengel to finish eight games ahead of the Chicago White Sox. Mickey Mantle took AL MVP honors, hitting .365 with 34 home runs and 94 RBI, while Yogi Berra added 24 homers behind the plate, and Yankee Stadium stayed the stage for October baseball. This time, though, the Fall Classic slipped away: Milwaukee's Lew Burdette beat New York three times, capping the Braves' seven-game World Series win with a Game 7 shutout in the Bronx. The season also closed an era in New York baseball — the Dodgers and Giants played their final seasons in the city in 1957 before moving to California, leaving the Yankees as New York's lone big-league team until the Mets arrived in 1962.
