Hank Aguirre - 1957 Topps #96
1957 Topps #96 Hank Aguirre

About Hank Aguirre
Hank "Mex" Aguirre — the nickname was a nod to his Mexican descent; his father was born in Jalisco — signed with Cleveland Indians scout Tom Downey in 1951 and debuted with the Indians in September 1955, tossing a three-hit shutout of Detroit in his first start. As a 1956 rookie he struck out Ted Williams and had the ball autographed; weeks later Williams homered off him and hollered, "Hey kid, if you get that ball, I'll sign it for you, too." Card #96 is his Topps rookie card, issued just before Cleveland traded him and Jim Hegan to Detroit. The lefty blossomed there in 1962, leading the majors with a 2.21 ERA and winning 16 games as an AL All-Star. Over 16 seasons (75-72, 3.25 ERA) he hit a comical .085. He later built Detroit's Mexican Industries into a $100 million business with over 1,000 employees before his death in 1994.
