About Al Smith
Alphonse Eugene "Fuzzy" Smith, born February 7, 1928, in Kirkwood, Missouri, earned his nickname as a teenager for being the first of his crowd to sprout a beard. He debuted professionally with the Negro Leagues' Cleveland Buckeyes, was signed by Indians scout Laddie Placek, and reached the majors on July 10, 1953. An outfielder and third baseman, he played for Cleveland (1953-57, 1964), the Chicago White Sox (1958-62), the Baltimore Orioles (1963), and the Boston Red Sox (1964). A three-time All-Star, he anchored the 1954 pennant-winning Indians, homering in that World Series, then reached the 1959 Fall Classic with the White Sox. In 1955 he hit .306 and led the AL in games, plate appearances, times on base, and runs scored (123), finishing third in MVP voting. He retired with a .272 average, 1,458 hits, and 168 home runs. Smith is best remembered for the iconic 1959 World Series photo of a fan's spilled beer dousing him. This 1957 Topps card captures him mid-prime with Cleveland.
