1957 Topps #195 Bobby Avila

Cleveland Indians · American League · Series 3 (#177-264) · 2nd base
ErrorUER

Uncorrected error: "Needed" mispelled "neeed" It was never corrected, so there is only one version of the card.

The #176 "Bakep" error: the back header reads "EUGENF W. BAKEP," the whole name garbled on the printing plate. It is the ONLY error Topps corrected in 1957, which is why the error back carries the premium — a PSA population near 215, topping out at PSA 8.

About Bobby Avila

Roberto Francisco Ávila González was born April 2, 1924, in Veracruz, Mexico. He starred in the Mexican League with Puebla before the Cleveland Indians signed him in 1947, reaching the majors in 1949. A second baseman, Ávila spent a decade with Cleveland (1949-1958) and earned three All-Star selections (1952, 1954, 1955). His peak came in 1954, when he hit .341 to win the American League batting title, becoming the first Mexican-born player to lead the AL in hitting, and was named The Sporting News AL Player of the Year. That season he helped Cleveland win 111 games and the pennant, though the Indians were swept by the New York Giants in the World Series. He finished with 1,296 hits and a .281 average over 11 seasons. Known in Mexico as 'Beto,' short for Roberto, he adopted 'Bobby' in the States. He later served as president of the Mexican League and mayor of Veracruz, and entered the Mexican Baseball Hall of Fame in 1971. This 1957 Topps card (#195) carries an uncorrected error: 'needed' misspelled 'neeed' on the back.
