About Hal Brown
Hector Harold "Skinny" Brown was a right-handed knuckleball pitcher born December 11, 1924, in Greensboro, North Carolina. A WWII bomber gunner who once bailed out over the English Channel, he signed with the Red Sox, entered pro ball as a shortstop at Roanoke in 1946, and converted to pitching. He debuted with the Chicago White Sox in 1951 and pitched in the majors through 1964 for the White Sox, Boston Red Sox, Baltimore Orioles, New York Yankees, and Houston Colt .45s, finishing 85-92 with a 3.81 ERA over 358 games. Renowned for pinpoint control, he found his best years in Baltimore (1955-1962), going 12-5 with a career-low 3.06 ERA in 1960 while mentoring the young "Baby Birds" who chased the Yankees. His nickname "Skinny" was ironic: as he explained, "I was real fat as a baby," and in a large southern family everyone needed one. He was elected to the Baltimore Orioles Hall of Fame in 1991 and died in 2015.
