also known as Willie Miranda
Baltimore Orioles · American League · Series 2 (#89-176) · shortstop
ErrorUER

Uncorrected error: Born in '26, not '28. It was never corrected, so there is only one version of the card.

The #176 "Bakep" error: the back header reads "EUGENF W. BAKEP," the whole name garbled on the printing plate. It is the ONLY error Topps corrected in 1957, which is why the error back carries the premium — a PSA population near 215, topping out at PSA 8.

About Willie Miranda

Guillermo "Willy" Miranda Pérez (born May 24, 1926, in Velasco, Cuba) epitomized the "good field, no hit" shortstop. Signed by Senators scout Joe Cambria, he broke into pro ball with Cuba's Almendares Alacranes, earning winter-league Rookie of the Year honors in 1948-49 and eventually winning five Cuban championships. He debuted in the majors in 1951 and bounced among the Senators, White Sox, Browns and Yankees before landing with the Baltimore Orioles (1955-1959), his defensive home. A slick, flamboyant fielder who led the American League in double plays in 1955, he was dubbed "The Little Cuban" for his slight 5'9½", 150-pound frame; manager Paul Richards likened his acrobatics to "Ringling Brothers." Broadcaster Ernie Harwell quipped he "hit left, right and seldom"—Miranda batted just .221 lifetime with 6 homers. He reached the 1953 World Series as a Yankees reserve. This 1957 Topps card carries a known error, listing his birth as 1928 rather than 1926.
