About Jack Harshman

John Elvin "Jack" Harshman (1927-2013) was a left-handed pitcher born in San Diego, California. He signed with the Pacific Coast League's San Diego Padres in 1945 and spent his early pro years as a slugging first baseman, belting 47 home runs for the Nashville Vols in 1951. That season Nashville owner Larry Gilbert suggested his route back to the majors ran "by way of his left arm rather than his bat." After going 23-7 with a 3.27 ERA pitching for Nashville in 1953, the Chicago White Sox bought his rights. He debuted with the New York Giants in 1948 and pitched through 1960, also appearing for the Baltimore Orioles, Boston Red Sox and Cleveland Indians, finishing 69-65 with a 3.50 ERA. On July 25, 1954, he struck out 16 Red Sox, including Ted Williams, at Fenway Park, a ballpark record that stood until Roger Clemens fanned 20 in 1986. A rare slugging pitcher, he hit 21 career home runs, once the highest home-run-to-hit ratio for any batter with 400-plus plate appearances. This 1957 Topps card comes from his White Sox years.
