About George Zuverink

George Zuverink signed with the St. Louis Cardinals in 1946 after a scout saw the sidearming sinkerballer pitching for his military squadron in the Philippines during World War II. The Holland, Michigan, native debuted with Cleveland in 1951, then pitched for Cincinnati and Detroit before finding his niche in Baltimore's bullpen from 1955 to 1959. He led the American League in appearances two years running — 62 games in 1956, when his 16 saves were retroactively recognized as the league lead, and 56 in 1957, when he went 10-6 with a 2.48 ERA. This card caught him fresh off that workhorse 1956 campaign. Orioles broadcasters dubbed him "Zoove," and Chuck Thompson renamed the bullpen the "Zoov-rink." On July 1, 1957, he and rookie catcher Frank Zupo formed the first all-Z battery in big-league history. Zuverink finished 32-36 with 40 saves, sold life insurance for more than 25 years after baseball, and died in 2014 at age 90.
