About Bob Nieman
Bob Nieman announced himself like no big leaguer before or since: on September 14, 1951, at Fenway Park, the St. Louis Browns rookie homered in his first two major-league at-bats — still the only player ever to do it. Signed by a Cincinnati Reds scout in 1948, the bespectacled outfielder hit .295 lifetime with 125 home runs and a 132 OPS+ over twelve seasons for the Browns, Tigers, White Sox, Orioles, Cardinals, Indians, and Giants, yet never made an All-Star team. Traded to Baltimore in May 1956, he promptly hit .320 with a .436 on-base percentage — fifth in the American League — moving manager Paul Richards to declare he "wouldn't trade Nieman for any other left fielder." This card catches him at that Orioles peak. A pinch-hitting specialist for the 1962 pennant-winning Giants, he drew a walk in his lone World Series plate appearance, then scouted for two decades, coining the term "Nieman arm" for weak-throwing prospects. He died of a heart attack in 1985 at 58.
