Cleveland Indians · American League · Series 1 (#1-88) · pitcher
ErrorUER

Uncorrected error: Born in '29, not '30 It was never corrected, so there is only one version of the card.

The #176 "Bakep" error: the back header reads "EUGENF W. BAKEP," the whole name garbled on the printing plate. It is the ONLY error Topps corrected in 1957, which is why the error back carries the premium — a PSA population near 215, topping out at PSA 8.

About Don Mossi

A crag-faced left-hander whose prominent ears earned him the teammate nicknames "Ears" and "The Sphinx," Don Mossi (1929-2019) signed with Cleveland in 1949 and spent five minor-league seasons before sticking in 1954. Paired with roommate Ray Narleski as the rookie lefty-righty bullpen duo of the 111-win Indians, he went 6-1 with a 1.94 ERA, then threw four scoreless innings in the World Series sweep by the Giants. His lone All-Star nod came in 1957 -- he struck out Eddie Mathews with two on in the ninth -- during an 11-10 season for Cleveland. Traded with Narleski to Detroit for Billy Martin before 1959, he stunned Tiger fans by going 17-9 as a starter. Over 12 seasons (Indians, Tigers, White Sox, Athletics) he finished 101-80 with a 3.43 ERA and 50 saves, retiring with a then-record .990 fielding percentage for pitchers. This card carries an error: it lists his birth year as 1930; he was born January 11, 1929.
